SAT Multiple-Choice Questions

There are a variety of different multiple-choice questions included on the SAT and each multiple-choice section is designed differently. However, there are certain general things to keep in mind while completing SAT multiple-choice questions on the test.

First, the most important thing to remember about any section of the SAT is that you will not be penalized for leaving answers blank, but you will be penalized for incorrect answers. Since each section is timed, it is important for you to know how much time you are spending while attempting to answer a particular question. If you can't answer a question correct and are taking too long, skip it and move on. It is always better to skip a question if you have no idea what the answer is than it is to make a wild guess. Skipping an answer simply means that you will receive no credit for a correct answer, but you will not lose the -point penalty for an incorrect answer.

Second, if you are having a problem with a question, remain calm and try to eliminate any of the choices that you believe are incorrect. For example, if the question asks what is 30 divided by 5, there is no reason to believe that the answer is 25, so you can eliminate that choice. The problems on the SAT will be more complicated than this example, but using the process of elimination in this way can help you find a correct answer even if you can't solve the problem through normal procedures.

The main idea of this strategy is to eliminate the obviously incorrect options or discover through analysis the reasons why a particular choice might be incorrect. This can be an important strategy to keep in mind. An educated guess is always much more likely to score points than a thoughtless, random guess, and you will be less likely to receive the penalty associated with an incorrect answer.

Finally, the SAT test is a timed test with extremely strict time limits. You must adhere to the time constraints. However, regardless of the amount of time you have, it is always important for you to read each question carefully. Give yourself enough time to read and comprehend the question before you attempt to solve the problem or answer the question. You will usually have no more than a minute to a minute and a half to answer each question, but you should take advantage of the full minute and a half if you need it.
