AP Art Portfolio Exam Requirements
USINFO | 2014-01-03 15:16
The AP Studio Art curriculum differs from other AP courses in that there is no standardized exam that evaluates success in the course. Instead, students submit a portfolio of artwork to be reviewed by a panel of artist-educators. The submitted artwork may have been completed outside of school or as part of an art class curriculum.

Drawing
●Submissions in the drawing category can include any type of art that is produced by directly making marks on a surface, including painting, printmaking, or mixed media. As is the case for all of the AP Studio Art portfolio types, portfolios submitted under the Drawing category will be assessed according to Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. The requirements for the Quality section of the portfolio are five actual drawings (images of drawings are not acceptable for this section). The drawings must not be larger than 18 by 24 inches. For the Quality section, select your best five pieces, whether they are related to each other or not. The Concentration section requires 12 images total, some of which may be details of a larger work. For this section, pick works that cohere together according to a common aesthetic concept. The Breadth section of the portfolio must include 12 images (one image each of 12 different works). For the Breadth section, select works that demonstrate a variety of different approaches to drawing.

2-D Design
●The 2-D Design portfolio category can also include many different types of art, but it is somewhat less open-ended than the Drawing category. For submission in the 2-D Design category, portfolios should emphasize artworks that use the principles of art to convey meaning. The meaning conveyed by the works could be literal, as is the case with graphic and advertising design. However, the meaning could simply consist of visual coherence, and so abstract art could also be included in the 2-D Design category. The sections of portfolio review for the 2-D Design category are the same as those for Drawing, with the same requirements for each: five actual works (no larger than 18 by 24 inches) for the Quality section; 12 images (which may include details) for the Concentration section; and 12 images (one image each of 12 works) for the Breadth section.

3-D Design
●The 3-D Design portfolio category includes any kind of art that exists in three dimensions. Submissions in this category should explore three-dimensional depth and space, but there are no limitations or restrictions on size, materials, or style of work. The submission requirements for the 3-D Design category are different from the other AP Studio Art portfolio categories: no actual works are submitted for review in this category, meaning that the size of the works included in the portfolio is entirely determined by the student. For the Quality section of the portfolio, include a total of 10 images (two different views of five different works). For the Concentration section, include 12 images, some of which may be details. The Breadth section should include a total of 16 images (two different views of eight different works).
