The SAT Math Test

The SAT Mathematics test is designed to test your ability to work with Math in many different forms. Although it may be possible to answer questions about some topics you have never studied, a good, broad understanding of many different Math topics is best.

SAT Math Test consists of three sections. Almost all the questions will be multiple choice. Wrong answers will cost you a quarter-point, so make sure you can eliminate one or two answers before taking a blind guess. There will also be ten "student-produced response questions," where you are given no choices. Instead, you must write the correct answer on a grid. The good news in that you do not lose any points for an incorrect answer, so you should attempt as many problems as you can for this section.

Unlike the ACT, you do not need to memorize any formulas for the SAT test. Everything you need to solve the problem will be given to you. There is a general formula section at the beginning of the test, but you will need to know which formula to use for each problem. Occasionally there will be a formula within a problem that you will need to use just for that problem.

Many of the Math problems can be solved in more than one way, but there is almost always an easy solution. Very often the simplest solution is not the first one you see, so make sure you read every question twice so you understand it.

Typically the questions get harder as you get farther on the test. This does not mean that you should stop trying once you can’t answer a question, but it does mean that the answers to the first few questions on the test should be pretty straightforward and obvious.
