TUCSON - In four incidents last weekend, Border agents seized a variety of illegal drugs and arrested 10 illegal immigrants being smuggled into the United States, according to a Customs and Border Protection news release.

On Thursday afternoon, Border Patrol agents working at a checkpoint on Highway 191 stopped two U.S. citizens, and after a drug-sniffing dog alerted the presence of drugs, they were referred to secondary inspection, the release stated. Agents found two grams of marijuana, 39 grams of methamphetamine, three oxycodone pills, seven grams of mushrooms and two handguns. The citizens were arrested for narcotics smuggling.

On Saturday evening, agents at the Willcox Station stopped a 1997 Nissan Altima on Highway 186 and located three illegal immigrants, two of whom were in the vehicle's trunk, officials stated. The driver absconded into the desert, and the smuggled immigrants were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally. Additional agents responded, but were unable to find the driver.

Also on Saturday, agents conducting inspection at the Interstate 19 checkpoint near Amado found two illegal aliens from Mexico hiding in the trunk of a sedan. All parties were arrested, the release stated.

On Sunday, Tucson Station agents working near Three Points found five illegal immigrants hiding in the trunk of a 2007 Nissan Altima during inspection at a State Route 86 checkpoint, CBP officials stated. The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested for human smuggling and the immigrants were charged for being in the U.S. illegally.

"The Border Patrol continues to operate checkpoints in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner," officials stated in the release. "Immigration checkpoints are paramount to effectively stopping smugglers from transporting humans and contraband into the interior of the U.S."
